Mark,

1. The parent was correct, that NO ONE should be
coaching outside the technical area (within the ten
meter radius arc at the center of the field, on the
sidelines).
2. The parent was also very wrong in going to you
directly. He/she should have talked to the coach who
could then have brought this valid complaint to your
attention.
3. At U7, there is a LOT of hand-holding of the
players in educating them how to play the game and be
good sports. Don't fret this issue in today's game.
As you continue refereeing to higher levels, you will
look back and laugh at a great deal of things that
occurred with upset coaches and parents. They will
also grow in knowledge as their children move up.
Coaches and parents get very emotional and all you can
do is learn the laws and gain experience to be able to
handle all that comes your way. Eventually, you will
gain confidence in your knowledge and game management
skills, able to handle the irate masses who know far
less than you. This is not to say that you will not
make mistakes, and you will, but you are only human.
Keep reminding yourself that you are there for the
players and this ain't the World Cup!
