I think discussion is helpful for this wonderful game. Soccer is a 
exciting game and quite a challenge to officiate.

Speaking as a coach who has coached in other regions and at the upper 
ages as well as the younger ages, I have to say that the officials in 
our region are of the highest quality I have seen in AYSO. I see them 
as a group of very dedicated volunteers who are trying to make the 
games safe, fair and fun. At the younger ages, some of the officials 
are learning how to be refs. I salute them. They must start somewhere.

There is an open forum that the refs hold during the week to discuss 
issues and philosophy. I have attended it and found it helpful.

If you (coaches) find yourselves coaching at the upper ages against 
teams in other regions, you will experience a quality of officiating 
is variable and different from our region. Some refs favor their home 
teams, some clearly are not competent to officiate at the older ages 
- at times the play gets very physical and dangerous, and yet the 
majority are quite good. But our region offers a consistent group of 
quality refs.

I, for one, am quite pleased with the officiating in our region. All 
refs make mistakes, but we are quite fortunate to have the ones that 
we do and a group that is committed to improve and do their best.
